News: Weird News: Motorist Fined for Playing Flute
added:2003-09-15

Yup. According to Reuters, a guy in Germany got busted for playing the flute while driving 130 km/hour on a highway. The police spokesperson said he was playing the flute with both hands, and steering with his knees and feet. The best part of this story is his excuse to the police:

The 52-year-old from Salzburg in Austria, birthplace of Mozart, the composer whose works include the opera "The Magic Flute", told police he was not actually blowing the instrument. "He said he was just practising fingerings," said Bohnert.

News: New Big Band Arrangements at Marina Music
added:2003-07-24

Marina has a terrific collection of charts for jazz bands of all skill levels. For details on these titles and more, visit http://www.marinamusic.com or call 800-331-4528.

Buddy Rich Series

Winning the West – Bill Holman. As written for and performed by the Buddy Rich Big Band, here is the long-missing chart that Holman wrote to feature Buddy on drums and Pat LaBarbera on tenor sax. Great chart set to a quasi rock feel which shifts to swing and back again. This is a very high-energy, exciting chart which was played quite often by Buddy. Recorded on Keep the Customer Satisfied. Advanced. A1157 $59.00

Les Hooper Series

Local Time – Once again Hooper leads the way with a chart that is simple to play but still great to listen to and to play. Solo space is open for trumpet or others at your discretion. This chart has limited ranges, (occasional written D above the staff for 1st tpt., but generally much lower) but not limited musicality or charm. with a kind of hip, Basie-ish feel. Medium. A2506 $47.00

Stan Kenton Series

23ºN 82ºW – Bill Russo. This is one of the most creative, important big band compositions ever written by anyone! It is also a chart which has been in demand for many years. This chart is published in memory of the passing of Mr. Russo this past year (2003). He was a dynamic force in all of music, and this particular piece was his most requested work. This is exactly as it was recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on the New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm CD. If you have the "horses" this will be a big hit for your band. Solos for alto sax and trombone. Advanced. A3239 $59.00

All the Things You Are – arr. Gerry Mulligan. One of those "mystery" charts that hardly anyone knows about, this chart is a beauty. Mulligan was a master at creating moods and using wonderful chord substitutions, as he did in this medium ballad. The arrangement features Trumpet throughout (written to feature Buddy Childers), and it was played very often by the Kenton Band. The brass ranges and rhythms for all are very reasonable. This is a very impressive chart that is easy to play. Medium. 5-5-5-4 A3240 $47.00

Bali Hai – arr. Lennie Niehaus. This was recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Stage Door Swings, and it is one of Lennie's wonderful charts on a great Broadway standard tune. It has very reasonable ranges for all. This shifts between Latin and Swing Feels. Solo for Tenor Sax. 5-5-5-3 (can be played with 8 brass). Medium-advanced. A3242 $52.00

Oliver Nelson Series

Empty Ballroom Blues – Ellington / arr. Oliver Nelson. Nelson wrote an album for Johnny Hodges (Black, Brown & Beautiful, RCA) featuring the compositions of Duke Ellington and also some of his original things. This Ellington tune just romps and stomps right from the start. The ensemble "shouts" just scream with wonderful voicings that lift you up out of your seat! Solo space for Alto Sax, Trumpet and Piano. Ellington's melody and Nelson's arrangement are an absolute winning combination! Advanced. G4020 $52.00

Shorty Rogers Series

Just A Few – Shorty Rogers / arr. Bob Curnow. One of Shorty Rogers' hippest tunes. The melody is stated by alto and trumpet, and the whole chart has that wonderful "West Coast" feel to it. There is a neat section which features Flugelhorn and saxophones in a long soli, as well as solo space for alto, trumpet and piano. Medium-advanced. C7007 $52.00

Walk, Don't Run – Here is a wonderful, easy, swinging chart which is on the CD Shorty Rogers Courts the Count. This piece has a very delightful sound to it, and is very easy for even the youngest bands to play, but pros will love it too. Features optional clarinet with trumpet on the melody (as played by Jimmy Giuffre and Shorty) and lots of solo space. Medium. R2009 $47.00

Pat Metheny / Bob Curnow Series

ANOTHER LIFE – Pat Metheny / arr. Bob Curnow. This is another superb ballad, very much in the Metheny mode. It is scored to feature flugelhorn throughout, but there are optional solo parts for Alto Sax or Guitar. The original Metheny recording of this composition is on the Grammy winning CD "Speaking of Now" by the Pat Metheny Group. Pat's recorded, beautifully improvised solo has been transcribed by Curnow, and it is included with the solo part. 5-4-4-4 (with optional 10 brass parts if needed). Medium-advanced. A0127 $59.00

Young Bands

ESSENCE, THE – Dan Haerle. Dan has created a rock ballad, with a nifty, repeating vamp figure, that can be played by even the most inexperienced players. He has managed to do this without compromising the music. The chart is wonderful! The melody is stated by 2 altos, trumpet and trombone in unison, and it grooves on from there. Solos for alto, tenor and trumpet (written out, or improvised). Medium-easy. E2208 $47.00

Vocal Solo with Big Band Series

COME FLY WITH ME – trans. Shaun Byrne. The all time Nelson Riddle / Frank Sinatra classic. Includes string cues in the keyboard part for that unique Riddle sound. Original lyrics as featured on the re-issued album Sinatra at the Sands. Key of Bb. Vocal range: Bb below middle C to 3rd space C. Vocal cued in score, but there is no vocal part, only a lyric sheet. D3343 $61.00

STRAIGHTEN UP AND FLY RIGHT – Nat King Cole / trans. Shaun Bryne. The Nat King Cole classic as recorded by Robbie Williams. A great swinger! Key of Bb Vocal range: 1st space F to 4th space E. Medium-advanced. D3342 $61.00

Charles Mingus Series

BETTER GET IT IN YOUR SOUL – Charles Mingus / arr. Bob Hanner / trans. Shaun Byrne. A hard driving 6/8 gospel blues style chart, as recorded by Woody Herman. This tremendous arrangement has all the gutsy feel of the original Mingus version. Medium-advanced. B0144 $62.00

News: New Music: Bernie Williams - The Journey Within
added:2003-07-11

Bernie Williams: The Journey Within On July 15 GRP Records will release The Journey Within, the debut recording of NY Yankees star Bernie Williams. The first single "Just Because" will start getting radio play on June 9.

Williams studied music from the age of thirteen at the Escuela Libre de Musica in Puerto Rico. He had initially planned on a career in music before turning to Major League Baseball.
Seven of the eleven tracks on this disc were penned by Williams; the remaining tracks include covers of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes", Kansas' "Dust In The Wind", Academy Award-winning songwriter John Denicola and Patti Maloney's "The Way", and "Samba Novo" by Baden Powell. There are guest appearances from Bela Fleck, Ruben Blades, and Gilberto Santa Rosa, and session players Leland Sklar (Phil Collins, James Taylor), Kenny Aronoff (Melissa Etheridge, John Mellencamp), David Sancious (Eric Clapton, Sting) and Luis Conte (Santana, Celine Dion).

"The Bernie Williams signing is not about a future Hall of Fame baseball player. It is about a talented and dedicated musician whose newly-recorded album deserves the best in the way of marketing and distribution. We are very proud to have Bernie on the GRP/Verve roster," says Ron Goldstein, President and CEO of The Verve Music Group.

Williams will kick off The Journey Within with a live concert event at Chicago's House of Blues on July 13, which will coincide with Major League Baseball's All-Star Week.

Ok, that's enough of the press hype.

I gave this one a listen, and it's not my kind of thing. If you are into the whole Mindi Abair thing, then you will probably like this too.

News: JAZZ.FM91 Summer 2003 Fund Drive
added:2003-07-10

Here's a message from Chuck Camroux, president of Jazz FM in Toronto:

The last few months have been extremely difficult for many Toronto businesses. SARS, the war and other events have hit Toronto hard, which in turn has created real financial difficulty for JAZZ.FM91. Over the fiscal year, our listeners have shown their appreciation for this radio service by continuing to contribute, but advertising and other revenue streams have slowed dramatically, some even drying up completely.

With our limited advertising revenues down, JAZZ.FM91 must once again ask for your support. We are a non-profit corporation, dedicated to jazz, blues and specialty music that you can’t hear elsewhere on the radio dial. To keep this wonderful and important music on the air, we need your help. Less than 4% of our listeners are contributors and while it’s not possible for every listener to contribute, even a few hundred more will make a huge difference to the operation.

This weekend, we will be holding a special three day on-air fund drive. We are asking you to help us generate just $60,000 in new donor dollars, and when we reach that amount, we will stop fundraising. In fact, if we reach $60,000 before the weekend, we will not even have to have a fund drive. I am asking those of you who have not contributed to the station, but enjoy the programming to please take a minute to make your voice and your contribution count. There are nearly 300,000 listeners to JAZZ.FM91 each week, and if just 1% would become new supporters this week, JAZZ.FM91 would be well on its way to complete financial stability. Just 1% of you, our listeners, that’s all. If you are already a contributor and can make an additional gift during this unusual time that would be fantastic.

Please take a moment right now and call 1-800-811-2400 during business hours or go online at anytime and visit our secure page.

With our sincere gratitude for your support,

Chuck Camroux
